Technical Editing
What is a technical editor? A technical editor is an expert in technical writing who often acts as project manager, proofreader, and technical writer all rolled into one.
A technical editor works with your technical writing staff to plan your document set. This entails ensuring that each manual meets the needs of it’s particular audience while ensure there are no information gaps in the manual set and no needless duplication.
While each technical writer or team of technical writers concentrates on one or more manuals, the technical editor works on the level of the document set and ensures that all the manuals work together as a whole. This includes exhibiting a particular company style and tone.
The technical editor also ensures that writers adhere to the company style guide and acts as the subject matter expert with regard to grammar, syntax, and diction.
A technical editor is essential if your company offshores its technical writing. Entrusting your technical documentation to the lowest bidder is courting disaster with your customers. Unless you produce your documents in an English speaking country, a technical editing staff is not an option, it’s essential. Don’t scrimp in this area. Hire enough editors to proofread 100% of your documentation. After all, if you’re saving money by offshoring, why compromise quality to save a few more dollars?
I can help. I have years of experience not only as a technical writer and editor, but also as an engineer and manager. I can “walk the walk, and talk the talk.”
Working with documentation written by non-native English speakers is nothing new to me. I have years of experience working with Chinese technical writers, and experience working with Russian technical writers as well. Not only have I worked for years as a technical editor, I’ve also set up and managed technical editing groups.
